I. 75 lat temu ukazał się Rok 1984 Georga Orwella. 40 lat dzieli nas od daty wizji świata przedstawionej w tym niepokojącym dziele – możliwej przyszłości, w której obywatele państwa podlegają totalnej kontroli ze strony nieuczciwej i zbrodniczej władzy. Utopie, wizje futurystyczne i katastroficzne zwykle po latach domagają się konfrontacji z rzeczywistością. Dopiero wtedy możemy stwierdzić, czy były trafne lub mylne.
II. Wskazane rocznice wywołują pytania: Czy i jak dalece spełniła się ta wizja? Czy obecnie widzimy jej przejawy i skutki? Jak reagujemy na dowody jej realizacji? Co czujemy biorąc dzisiaj do ręki książkę Orwella Rok 1984? Jak można owe dzieło zmienić, uzupełnić lub skorygować, aby lepiej spełniało swoją misję walki z totalitarną kontrolą?
III. Książka to treść i forma. Książka artystyczna to przede wszystkim forma, często inspirowana jedynie treścią tekstu. Dlatego, zadając powyższe pytania, apelujemy do artystów ze wszystkich kontynentów, aby wzięli ponownie (lub po raz pierwszy) do ręki egzemplarz książki Rok 1984 i przenieśli lub nanieśli na jego formę swoje współczesne widzenie świata w orwellowskiej perspektywie.
IV. Prosimy zainteresowanych o dokonanie dowolnego artystycznego działania na dostępnym egzemplarzu którejkolwiek z mnóstwa dotychczasowych edycji Roku 1984 publikowanych we wszelkich krajach, gdzie to wybitne dzieło mogło się ukazać bez cenzury lub w podziemnym obiegu.
Możliwe jest też zaprojektowanie lub stworzenie książki artystycznej od nowa – wtedy wystarczy dołączyć dany egzemplarz, który był jej inspiracją.
V. Muzeum Książki Artystycznej w Łodzi będzie gromadzić i publikować na stronie https:/mkalodz.pl/orwellsworld nadsyłane prace konkursowe do końca 2024 r. Warunkiem uczestnictwa w konkursie jest zgłoszenie do końca czerwca 2024 r. akcesu za pomocą poczty e-mail wraz z załączoną fotografią egzemplarza
książki danej edycji dzieła Orwella w kraju macierzystym uczestnika, na podstawie którego stworzy własną książkę artystyczną.
VI. Zgłoszenia prosimy wysyłać na adres: info@mkalodz.pl Wykonane prace prosimy nadsyłać do końca października 2024 r, zaś do końca tego roku prace zostaną poddane ocenie Jury, które uwzględni głosowanie publiczności w Internecie na stronie https:/mkalodz.pl/orwellsworld z zamieszczonymi fotografiami prac. Następnie zostaną one wystawione w Muzeum Książki Artystycznej w 2025 r.
VII. W konkursie Jury przyzna dwojakiego rodzaju nagrody w formie rzeczowej:
- Wystawa indywidualna w Muzeum Książki Artystycznej w Łodzi;
- Wsparcie techniczne dla artystki lub artysty przy realizacji kolejnej książki.
Następnie zostanie stworzona wystawa czasowa książek artystycznych pt. ORWELL’S WORLD 2024, która będzie stanowić ofertę wystawienniczą muzeum na rzecz ekspozycji w innych instytucjach kultury w kraju i za granicą.

INTERNATIONAL ART BOOK CONTEST
I. 75 years ago George Orwell’s 1984 was published. We are 40 years away from the date of the vision of the world presented in this disturbing work – a possible future in which the citizens of the country are subject to total control by a dishonest and criminal power. Utopias, futuristic and catastrophic visions usually demand a confrontation with reality after many years. Only then can we tell if they were accurate or wrong.
II. These anniversaries raise the question: Has this vision been fulfilled and to what extent? Are we now seeing its manifestations and effects? How do we react to the evidence of its implementation? How do we feel today when we pick up Orwell’s book 1984? How can this work be changed, supplemented, or corrected to better fulfill its mission of fighting totalitarian control?
III. A book is content and form. An artist’s book is first and foremost a form, often inspired only by the content of the text. Therefore, by asking the above questions, we appeal to artists from all continents to pick up a copy of 1984 again (or for the first time) and transfer or apply to its form their contemporary view of the world in an Orwellian perspective.
IV. We ask those interested to perform any artistic action on the available copy of any of the many previous editions of the Year 1984 published in all countries where this outstanding work may have been published without censorship or in underground circulation. It is also possible to design or create an artist’s book from scratch – then it is enough to attach the copy that was its inspiration.
V. The Book Art Museum in Łódź will collect and publish the submitted competition works on a special website until the end of 2024. In order to participate in the competition, the participant must submit an application by e-mail by the end of June 2024 along with an attached photograph of a copy of the book of a given edition of Orwell’s work in the participant’s home country, on the basis of
which they will create their own art book.
VI. Applications should be sent to: info@mkalodz.pl Completed works should be sent by the end of October 2024, and by the end of this year the works will be evaluated by the Jury, which will take into account the audience vote on the Internet after the publication of the competition website with photos of the works. They will then be exhibited at the Book Art Museum in 2025.
VII. In the competition, the Jury will award two types of prizes in kind:
- Individual exhibition at the Book Art Museum in Łódź;
- Technical support for the artist in the production of the next book.
This will be followed by a temporary exhibition of art books entitled ORWELL’S WORLD 2024, which will constitute the museum’s exhibition offer for exhibitions in other cultural institutions in Poland and abroad.
